I grew up in the tropics so I really love pineapples. I thought what it would taste like to combine this wonderful fruit with apple cider vinegar. So, I decided to juice pineapples, ginger, and add my ACV.

Still, being the persistent little hard head that I am, I continued. I went back to my favorite flavor which was the pineapple and ginger juice. I also changed the time of time that I took my beverage. Instead of drinking it early morning like my morning coffee, I now drink it after I have my breakfast.

I was curious what my progress was so I measured my weight and had my blood pressure checked.

Totally giving up the sweet stuff may not be an option for many but we’re glad to know that there are substitutes available now that will satisfy the sweet tooth but are healthier. Just keep in mind though that just because you used a white sugar substitute when making your favorite treats and sweets, it won’t necessarily turn that baked doughnut you prepared into a superfood. Eating in moderation is still one of the keys to weight loss. These substitutes offer a better alternative and some health benefits too.

1.) Dates

Dates are the perfect substitute for sugar because they are naturally sweet. Another added benefit of dates is that they’re full of fiber. 3.) Spices

Now, don’t be surprised. Sugar substitutes don’t necessarily have to be very sweet. When it comes to discarding that “white stuff” but still wanting to have flavor, sweetness, and a little bit of kick in your drinks or recipes a good trick to use is grab spices like cinnamon or a vanilla bean. (Please take note that we mean the real vanilla bean pod and utilizing those little specks and not use powder or liquid vanilla.)

Admittedly, this might take a little bit of getting used to but once you do this for a few short days you would be surprised to find how well your body has adapted to the change.

Just about any time of the year we get up and make a resolve that “today” will be the day that we’ll do things differently and finally start losing weight. We are going to get up from our couches, hit the gym, and exercise more!

By lessening the pressure that you put on yourself you might just be surprised how success will come knocking at your door and not realize you’re already reaping benefits. Here are three tips that I have personally implemented in my own life and have reaped the benefits.

1.) Eat Breakfast Everyday

If there is ONE thing you can do right now to help you get started with your weight loss journey is start eating breakfast every day. A balanced meal will get you through your day, cut back on your cravings, and give you more energy.

Instead of just preparing coffee early morning, investing in a breakfast maker will make preparing a meal so much easier. Don’t just wait for your coffee to brew. Crack two eggs on the griddle, grill a few sausages or your favorite vegetarian equivalent, then toast a few slices of bread in the oven. When your coffee’s done you have your meal ready as well.

Studies have demonstrated that the time meals are consumed are as important as the contents of the meals itself. Experiments demonstrated that with identical meals, calories ingested entirely during breakfast time led to a more stable or even reduced weight whereas the same number of calories eaten at night led to weight gain.

Another good reason not to skip breakfast is to make sure that your body gets the nutrients it needs to help you work. If you skip breakfast, your body will think that it is “starving” and slow down your metabolism. There are also unwanted effects of breakfast skipping in the brain. Substituting a good meal for just a cup of coffee and grabbing a sweet roll for breakfast is almost as bad as not eating breakfast.

2.) Ditch The Soda and Drink Water

Along with eating breakfast daily, I have significantly cut back on my soda, cola, and fizzy drinks. I now drink water all the time. There are times I go for months without drinking cola at all. I used to drink soda/cola every single day as I especially love pairing it with my meals. It took a while for me to fully give up soda as I’ve been drinking it since I was a kid. Slowly, I made the change because I knew that it was wrong and I wanted to be healthier. We’ve heard it all before, “Water is good for you!”. At first I started to drink juices thinking that it’s a much healthier choice than cola. Yes, to a degree it is true but often instant juices still contain a high sugar content and other chemicals. Here’s the thing though, I didn’t like drinking water at first simply because it was too “flat”. I wanted my water to have flavor. I’ve seen flavored water in the stores and I thought they were better. But the flavored water come with sweeteners and who-knows-what-else! Buy different colored water bottles, fill them with water, put them in your fridge where you usually keep your soda bottles and cans. That way when you see these wonderful and colorful bottles your subconscious mind will be more drawn to the bottle of water.

After a few months of cutting back on soda, I noticed that the taste of plain water does not bother me anymore. 5.) Don’t forget about your sun protection.

If you are someone who loves to be outdoors or you prefer exercising outdoors then establish good sun protection habits. Try to look for shady areas to exercise in like parks with lots of trees. Ingredients

1 pound asparagus (Green beans can also be used)

1 medium lemon

3 tablespoons of olive oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon ground cashews (for garnish)

Preparation

Carefully wash the asparagus. Cut off the ends and steam until the stems are cooked but still remain firm.

In a bowl, mix the oil, salt, pepper, and nutmeg together with the juice of the lemon.

Arrange the asparagus on your dish and drizzle the lemon dressing mixture on top.

Garnish with ground cashews and serve.

Sweet potato fries with curry dip

Sweet Potato French Fries

Ingredients

For the fries:

2 pounds sweet potatoes. Peeled and cut into 1/2-inch thick wedges

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

For the dip:

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 cup ketchup of your choice

1 teaspoon mild curry powder

2 green onions, chopped

Preparation

Preheat your oven to 200°C or 400°F

In a bowl, toss your sweet potato wedges with the extra-virgin olive oil, salt, and paprika. Be sure to get the wedges evenly coated.

Spread the coated sweet potatoes on a baking sheet.

Bake the sweet potatoes until soft. Approximately 20 minutes.

On your skillet, heat the olive oil and cook the green onions with curry powder until they are softened and fragrant for approximately 1 minute. Stir in the ketchup and transfer to a dipping bowl.

Serve together with your baked sweet potatoes and enjoy.

Eggplant Croquettes

Eggplant Croquettes

Ingredients

2 pounds eggplant, peeled and cubed

1 cup shredded cheese of your choice (we used mild Cheddar cheese)

1 cup seasoned bread crumbs

2 eggs, beaten

2 tablespoons dried parsley

2 tablespoons white onions, chopped

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Preparation

Microwave eggplants in a bowl on medium-high heat for 3 minutes. Turn over eggplants and microwave again for another 2 minutes.

Check eggplants and see if they are tender. Cook for another 2 minutes if the eggplants are still hard. Drain any liquid from the eggplants and mash it thoroughly.

In the same bowl combine cheese, bread crumbs, onion, garlic, parsley, and eggs with the mashed eggplants. Mix well. Shape the eggplant mixture into patties.

In a large pan heat oil for frying. Fry your eggplant patties on each side until golden brown.

Serve and enjoy!

(This recipe is great to prepare beforehand. Eggplant patties can be stored in the freezer and fried until you are ready.)
